How to buy I will keep this website current with shows and exhibitions and galleries, but you may contact me at any time to inquire about availabilities, commissions and prices.
Yacht and Boat Paintings I fished salt water for over forty years and sailed a 35 foot sloop with the family for 15 years. I enjoy painting boats under way and would be happy to make arrangements to paint your new vessel close hauled or broad reaching. See some examples under "Seascapes." Contact me for details.
Supports Supports are what the paint is laid on. I like to stretch and prime my own canvases when I can and I like to use "found" canvas when I can. I often use the canvas from the bags of lead shot left over from reloading skeet shells, and I have used bird seed and grass seed bags, coin and cash bags from banks and other odd businesses. I also like to laminate my own panels with canvas or linen. All of the supports are primed and prepared in accordance with accepted contemporary practice.
Smalls I enjoy painting small at times and have developed a handy cigar box painting kit that I can carry easily. It is perfect for making 6x6 or 6x8 paintings. I consider these works to be the equal of my large work and I devote the same energy and thought, that the creative process requires of larger work, to these small pieces. Sometimes I use the cigar box paintings to work out ideas and problems before graduating to a larger size version. Because they are small, they require less time and materials so the pricing of these pieces is less than that of larger work. some of these are studies that lead to larger works and some are as is. Less is often more.
Dogs and Cats I like painting sporting dogs and I would be happy to meet your dog if he comes with a good story. I do not like to work from photos, though, as it is hard to capture the "personality" of an animal in such a manner. I'll paint your cat, too, if it is friendly.
Plein Air and Alla Prima Work I enjoy seeing this kind of work in galleries and museums and have worked long and hard to develop my skills. To me, the process of interpreting what is in front of me is a learning experience that has been invaluable for my studio work as well.
Seascapes Seascapes are in a unique catagory. In contrast to most art that is done "live", that is, the artist paints a from real life, with an object or person that is somewhat still, the sea is moving all the time. This is both madddening for the artist and it is also very freeing. An artist can choose where to put elements of interest and elements of distraction. There are no limits, and the results can be very gratifying. I will take comissions for your favorite stretch of shoreline.
